Parent-Based Intervention for Childhood Anxiety and OCD: An overview of SPACE
If you are a member, please log in to access additional, potentially lower registration fee options.
About this event
While historic approaches to treating childhood anxiety, OCD, and related concerns have focused on developmentally-appropriate individual therapies (e.g., CBT, ERP), our emerging conceptualization of pediatric anxiety as a relational construct allows for effective intervention via the parent-child relationship. By working with parents/caregivers to strategically evaluate and reshape their responses to their child’s anxiety, we can effectively reduce childhood anxiety… even without a child’s participation in therapy.
During the first part of the workshop, participants will learn the core treatment components of SPACE, Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions, a time-limited and evidence-based intervention out of the Yale Child Studies Center. In the second part of the workshop, the presenters will discuss delivery of SPACE in both individual and group-based formats. Presenters will also provide a brief overview of SPACE for highly dependent adult children (“failure to launch”). Subsequently, the presenters will review a complex case study, inviting attendees to collaborate in their design of an effective SPACE intervention.
Generous opportunities for Q & A with presenters and discussion among participants will enrich our understanding of this parent-based intervention for increasingly prevalent childhood anxiety disorders, OCD, and related concerns.
- Define our current, enhanced conceptualization of pediatric anxiety disorders and how this conceptualization informs effective treatment options
- Define the two primary goals of SPACE and its core treatment components
- Understand how to assess indications and contraindications for goodness-of-fit between SPACE and any given patient; when indicated, design an effective SPACE-based intervention
