Eating Disorders: Best Practices for Assessment, Treatment, and Relapse Prevention
Three (3) Hour Virtual Professional Development Workshop for Texas Psychologists, LPCs, LCSWs, and LMFTs
Friday, October 16, 2020 - 9:00 am to noon
Dr. Schwalen and her multidisciplinary team will present on “Eating Disorder Relapse Prevention and Recovery in a Multidisciplinary Outpatient Clinic”. The workshop will provide an overview of eating disorders, discuss eating disorder development, and review application of evidence-based, best practices in a multidisciplinary outpatient setting. Our registered dietitians will also discuss their critical role in the relapse prevention and recovery for clients with eating disorders. The workshop will utilize active learning techniques to promote engagement with the material.
- Describe DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for the spectrum of eating disorders
- Examine the biopsychosocial model of eating disorder development
- Understand the concept of differentiating from ED
- Recognize the importance of evidence-based best practices for the treatment of eating disorders
- Explain the importance of nutrition therapy administered by the registered dietitian in eating disorder treatment
Sonia Schwalen, PhD, LP, NCSP, LSSP is a licensed psychologist and the founder of the Next STEPS Worldwide, PLLC and the RecoverED clinic (the RED clinic).
Dr. Schwalen is a licensed psychologist with a specialty in pediatric psychology and in eating disorders. Dr. Schwalen’s expertise include assessment and treatment of children/adolescents/adults with symptoms of anxiety, depression, ADHD and other disruptive behavior disorders. In addition, as a school psychologist Dr. Schwalen has expertise in the assessment of specific learning disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Intellectual Disability, Neuropsychological assessment, and linking systems of care for children and adults. She enjoys advocating for children and families at Section 504 and special education school meetings. She also enjoys conducing individual and family therapy in which she utilizes techniques from cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, interpersonal therapy, and acceptance and commitment therapy.
At the RecoverED clinic, Dr. Schwalen and her multidisciplinary team consisting of eating disorder therapists and eating disorder dietitians, specialize in the prevention and treatment of eating disorders by providing direct care with clients in the form of therapy, psychological assessment, and multidisciplinary team consultation. Dr. Schwalen specializes in program development and has a passion for treatment integration of the spectrum of eating disorders including obesity and avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder.
Lastly, she has presented at many local/national/international conferences, has been featured in online and print media for her expertise on eating disorders, and currently has a book in review that focuses on the principles of effective eating disorder treatment.
Melissa Bloom, MS, RD, LD is the Director of Nutrition Services for Next STEPS Worldwide. Melissa earned her B.S. in Dietetics and M.S. in Nutrition from Texas Woman's University in Denton, Texas. Melissa has extensive experience providing nutrition therapy in a multidisciplinary team with patients in all levels of care for eating disorder treatment, including inpatient, residential, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient and outpatient. Melissa has created eating disorder- based nutrition philosophies, curriculum and menu development for treatment facilities at various levels of care. Melissa's passion is to provide education and awareness to the significant dangers of eating disorders, and to provide hope that full recovery is possible.

Professional development/CEUs will be emailed once attendance has been confirmed and evaluations are completed. Credits are only available to those who attend the virtual event at the scheduled time. At this time, DPA is not able to provide credit to those who view the recording at a later date.
Psychologists - This activity qualifies for 3.0 hours of professional development credit for Texas Psychologists. Dallas Psychological Association, Inc. (DPA) maintains responsibility for the program and its content as per TSBEP rule 461.11(c)(2)(A). Counselors - This activity consists of 3.0 clock hours of continuing education instruction. DPA activities meet the continuing education requirements as outlined in Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors rule 681.142. Social Workers - This activity consists of 3.0 clock hours of continuing education instruction. DPA activities meet the continuing education requirements as outlined in Texas State Board of Examiners of Social Workers rules 781.509 and 781.511(a)-(c). Marriage and Family Therapists - This activity consists of 3.0 clock hours of continuing education instruction. DPA activities meet the continuing education requirements as outlined in Texas State Board of Examiners of Marriage and Family Therapists rule 801.264. For all license categories, full attendance is required; no partial credits will be offered for partial attendance. Please retain the certificate of completion and use as proof of completion when required.
