Workshop Description
Dr. Malhotra will present on the topic “Ethical Considerations in Working with LGBTQIA+ Patients.” The workshop will review the state of LGBTQ+ care in Texas; an overview of the current legislative climate with respect to LGBTQ+ care; and the ethical implications for patients and providers as they serve this unique and vulnerable population. The workshop will utilize active learning techniques to promote engagement with the material.
Learning Objectives
- Describe current sociopolitical trends impacting the care of LGBTQ+ patients in Texas
- Recognize emerging ethical considerations for patients and providers serving this community
- Utilizing clinical scenarios, articulate steps that can be taken to mitigate ethical concerns
- Formulate a plan for supervision and self-care when clinical work presents distressing ethical concerns
Presenter
Aekta Malhotra, MD is a psychiatrist in private practice at Apollo Psychiatry in Plano, TX. She earned her Bachelors degree in Molecular Biology and Masters degree in Applied Cognition and Neuroscience from the University of Texas at Dallas. She attended the Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine where she earned her MD degree. Thereafter, she completed her General Adult Psychiatry training at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.
In her private psychiatric practice, she focuses on treating adult patients while incorporating both psychodynamic psychotherapy and medication management. She actively provides Continuing Education talks on LGBTQ-affirming care for psychologists, therapists, and other physicians. She is an active member of the the Dallas Psychoanalytic Center and an invited discussant at various local and national meetings on LGBTQ-affirming care.
In addition to her private practice, she is a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) consultant, where she focuses on the psychodynamics of leadership and groups, structural racism and sexism, and organizational diagnosis and culture change.

Psychologists - This activity qualifies for 3.0 hours of professional development credit in the area of ethics for Texas Psychologists. Dallas Psychological Association, Inc. (DPA) maintains responsibility for the program and its content as per TSBEP rule 461.11(c)(2)(A). Counselors - This activity consists of 3.0 clock hours of continuing education instruction in the area of diversity. DPA activities meet the continuing education requirements as outlined in Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors rule 681.142. Social Workers - This activity consists of 3.0 clock hours of continuing education instruction in the area of diversity. DPA activities meet the continuing education requirements as outlined in Texas State Board of Examiners of Social Workers rules 781.509 and 781.511(a)-(c). Marriage and Family Therapists - This activity consists of 3.0 clock hours of continuing education instruction in the area of diversity.
