Stop Skipping Class! Examining Social Class Differences in the Therapeutic Relationship

About this event

Virtual Workshop Description

This workshop explores the ways social class differences shape our society and influence the therapeutic relationship. We will examine the growing economic inequality in the United States, with particular attention to disparities within the Dallas–Fort Worth Metroplex. The session will also address common biases held by psychologists and highlight the importance of delivering both culturally appropriate and culturally responsive care—especially when financial concerns are part of the clinical picture. Through a combination of didactic learning, guided discussion, and small-group breakout sessions, participants will have the opportunity to reflect on their own social class backgrounds and consider how these experiences inform their clinical work.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify how social class disparities, including those specific to the Dallas–Fort Worth Metroplex, influence access to mental health care and the therapeutic relationship.
  • Recognize common class-based biases within clinical practice and describe strategies to mitigate their impact on client care.
  • Apply principles of culturally appropriate and culturally responsive care when addressing financial stressors in therapy, informed by reflection on one’s own social class background.
