Workshop Description


This program will provide up-to-date information on the prevalence and clinical implications of social media use and gaming behavior in both community and clinical samples of children and adolescents. Presenters will present evidence-based tools that clinicians can use for the assessment of problematic social media use and gaming in youth. We will review the latest findings on the impact of social media, gaming, and technology on mental health in children and adolescents. The presentation will include clinical strategies and interventions to help youth and their families to navigate social media use and gaming including family communication strategies, parent modeling behaviors, social media literacy, problem-solving and developing family screen use plans. A special focus on problematic social media use and problematic gaming behaviors will be presented.

 

Learning Objectives


  • Participants will be familiarized on the recent scientific findings on social media use and its impact on mental health of children and adolescents.
  • Participants will be provided with tools and strategies to assess for problematic social media use and problematic gaming in youth.
  • Participants will learn clinical strategies when working with youth and families to manage social media use and gaming.
  • Participants will be taught effective interventions for mitigating risk in youth with problematic gaming behaviors.

Presenters




Betsy Kennard, PsyD
is a clinical psychologist with over 35 years of experience treating children and adolescents. She is currently a Professor in Psychiatry at UT Southwestern and Children’s Medical Center, the Program Director for the Suicide Prevention and Resilience Program at Children’s Health, Dallas. She has expertise in pediatric depression and suicide prevention. She even developed a CBT sequential treatment strategy to prevent relapse in youth with depression, which was tested in two National Institute of Mental Health funded clinical trials with positive results.



Alex Foxwell, PhD
is a licensed psychologist with over 12 years of experience in providing individual therapy interventions for adolescents and adults. She has expertise in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for depression, suicide prevention, generalized anxiety, performance/test anxiety, OCD, and other emotional difficulties. She is currently an Associate Professor in Psychiatry at UT Southwestern Medical Center.



Hayley Fournier, PhD
 received her doctoral degree from the APA-accredited Clinical Psychology Graduate Program at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. She subsequently completed her Postdoctoral Fellowship at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children. Dr. Fournier provides individual therapy to adolescents and adults struggling with a range of issues, primarily focusing on the treatment of anxiety and depression. She is currently an Adjunct Professor in Psychiatry at UT Southwestern Medical Center.



Jeremy Edge, LPC-S, IGDC
 is the owner and founder of the counseling practice, Escapingthe.com, PLLC. Jeremy is an International Gaming Disorder Certified counselor which is the leading certification for working with people with Gaming Disorder. He's also obtained the Digital Wellness Certificate through the Digital Wellness Institute. He provides counseling services to help clients experience balanced, healthy screen use. After personally experiencing the negative effects of problematic gaming, Jeremy devoted his work to helping those find balance with online activities. In addition to problematic screen use, Jeremy works well with men of all ages and his team works with teens, young adults, adults, and families. He received his Master’s degree in Community Counseling at UT San Antonio and Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from UT Tyler. Jeremy is married to a pediatrician and they live in Dallas with their two kids.

This is an IN-PERSON WORKSHOP. Check-in starts at 8:30 am, and light breakfast options will be provided before the event. Workshop starts at 9:00 am. Professional development/CEUs will be provided at the time of the event.

For all license categories, full attendance is required; no partial credits will be offered for partial attendance. Prior to receiving an attendance certificate, an evaluation must be completed.
