Obesity Treatment: Medical Advances, Bias Reduction, and Mental Health Integration

About this event

Virtual Workshop Description

Obesity is one of the leading causes of preventable death in the United States. By 2030, over 50% of Americans are estimated to have a BMI >30. As healthcare professionals, it is important to identify obesity as a chronic medical disease and why successful treatment requires a comprehensive and holistic approach. We will discuss how obesity is a disease and biological factors that make weight management challenging.

Additionally, we will discuss how obesity increases inflammatory signals and elevates risks for numerous medical conditions. We will highlight how second-generation injection weight loss medications (GLP-1RA) are utilized for obesity treatment as well as several other obesity-associated diseases. Moreover, we will discuss emerging research on how GLP-1RA affect mood, alcohol use, and binge eating behaviors.

Considering the psychological and emotional impact of obesity, individuals living with this chronic health condition may feel shame or guilt due to the obesity bias and stigma. We will discuss ways to mitigate the obesity bias in treatment. We will also present a variety of therapeutic techniques to effectively treat individuals with obesity who engage in emotional eating or have experienced trauma associated with body image.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify obesity as a chronic medical disease and describe underlying inflammatory mechanisms that contribute to medical conditions such as cardiovascular disease
  • Discuss the role and new FDA indications for GLP-1RA therapies
  • Investigate emerging benefits in mood, binge eating with GLP-1RA therapies
  • Address ways to mitigate obesity bias in treatment
  • Discuss the relationship between trauma, obesity, and emotional eating
  • Present therapeutic approaches to treating emotional eating and trauma associated with body image
  • Identify ways to promote body positivity
